Kuala Lumpur were the big winners in the MSSM (national schools) hockey championships, which ended at the KL Hockey Stadium here yesterday.

KL featured in four finals and emerged as the champions in three categories.

They won the boys’ Under-18 competition and also lifted both the boys’ and girls’ Under-12 titles. The one that got away was in the girls’ Under-18 event, losing 1-2 to Kedah in the final.

In the boys’ Under-18 final, KL were in good form to beat Perak 3-0.

Mohamed Shahril Sa’abah was the toast of the team, scoring two penalty corner goals in the 15th and 20th minutes to put KL on the road to victory. Mohamed Nor Aqmal Ghaffar was on target in the 50th minute for the third goal.

Coach Saiful Munir was elated that it turned out to be a good day for KL in the finals of the championships.

“This will boost the game in KL schools as more students will take up the game. We are very happy that we made the finals in all categories,” he said.

“We lost in the semi–finals of the Under-18 boys’ competition last year and we are happy to win the title this time.”

The KL girls’ Under-18 side conceded a goal in the very last minute of play to hand Kedah the title.

Kedah took the lead through Rosiayana Mohamd Desa in the 11th minute and KL equalised in the 53rd minute through Zhulaili Zakaria. Kedah surged forward in a last-ditch attempt to net the winner and Rosiayana found the mark off a goalmouth melee.

KL won the Under-12 titles in contrasting fashions. The boys defeated Terengganu 2-1 while the girls, who lost 1-4 to Kelantan, were handed the title after their opponents were disqualified for having overaged players in the team.

In the boys’ final, Mohamed Shafiq Ghani scored both the goals for KL in the 20th and 32nd minutes and emerged as the competition’s top scorer with 14 goals. Terengganu’s goal was scored by Mohamed Shafiq Izzuddin in the 33rd minute.
