06-07 St Anthony girls to upset Pushpadana

St. Anthony’s Girls College, Kandy created a major upset when they beat the more fancied and defending joint points Pushpadana Girls College Kandy 1-0 in their All Island Schools girls under 17 hockey tournament match organised by the Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Association and played at the Nandimithra International Hockey Stadium in Matale yesterday.
At half time there was no scoring.
St. Anthony’s Girls scored their winning goal off the stick of centre forward Keshani Herath.
Immediately afterwards, the Pushpadana Girls made a strong bid to equalise but St. Anthony’s Girls fortified their defence to prevent their opponents from scoring.
Visakha Vidyalaya also came up with a good performance to defeat the previous days’s giant killers Yasodara Vidyalaya 1-0. Left extreme Indisha Senaratne sounded the boards for Visakha Vidyalaya.
The other defending giant champions Seetha Devi Balika Vidyalaya after their previous day’s loss to Yasodara Vidyalaya kept their chances alive of making it to the final by defeating Christ Church College, Matale 1-0. Supuni Guruge scored for Seetha Devi BV.
President’s College, Maharagama continued their impressive performance in the tournament by defeating Musaeus College, Colombo 5-1 to qualify for the quarter-finals of the tournament for girls.
The semi-final line up for this morning will be President’s College vs Seetha Devi Balika Vidyalaya and Visakha Vidyalaya vs St. Anthony’s Girls College. The final will be played at 3.30 p.m. at the same venue.
The League stage of the championship for boys has been completed.
The quarter-final matches will be played this morning and the final will be played at 4.30 pm today.
