Malaysia’s chances of making the hockey semi-finals in the Commonwealth Games (Oct 3-15) are as good as none after the draw was released yesterday.

Malaysia, the 2006 bronze medallists, have defending champions Australia, India, Pakistan and Scotland for company in Group A.

Group B comprises England, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and Trinidad and Tobago.

Malaysia’s opening match is against India on Oct 5, followed by Pakistan (Oct 6), Scotland (Oct 8) and Australia (Oct 10).

Malaysia are expected to name a weakened side for the Commonwealth Games as they reserve their best players for the Asian Games, which will be in Guangzhou, China, in November.

Winning the Asian Games gold medal will allow them to book their berth in the 2012 London Olympics.
