12-09 India men claim the first Asian Champiosn trophy
2011-9-12
India defeated Pakistan 4-2 after penalty shootout in the final of the Asian Men’s Champions Trophy Hockey Tournament in Ordos, China on Sunday. Both normal and extra time finished goal-less goalless before the winner of the contest was eventually decided by penalties.
India grabbed a 4-2 triumph, a win which was guarenteed thanks to a brilliant performance from goalkeeper Shreejesh, who made saves from HAseem Abdul Khan and Shafqat Rasool to help his team to victory.
Rajpal Singh, Danish Mujtaba, Yuvraj Walmiki and Sarvanjit Singh scored for India in the penalty shootout, with Muhammad Rizwan and Waseem Ahmed finding the goal for Pakstan.
Earlier in the match, both India and Pakistan had ample opportunities to finish off claim victory in regulation time. Pakistan will rue the fact that they failed to convert any of the seven penalty corners that they had during the match, while India's Juvraj missed a glorious chance to seal the win with a close range strike in the 65th minute.
However, it was the young and talented India team that held its nerve in the Penalty Shoot-Out to win the Inaugural men's Asian Champions Trophy.
The bronze medal in the tournament went to Malaysia, who overcame Japan 1-0.
