12-05 Guiding the umpires
2010-5-12
A total of 29 participants turned up for the seminar which is being conducted by Peter von Reth, who umpired in 3 Olympics and 2 World Cups. In addition Peter served as umpires manager at the 2006 World Cup and 2008 Olympics.
Amongst the participants are chairmen of state umpires committees in the likes of Avtar Singh Pandher (Kuala Lumpur), Jagjeet Singh (Negri Sembilan), K.Kanaisan(Perak), K. Krishnan (Kedah), M. Daevandran (Pahang), M.Ragunathan (Penang)! Firdaus Vasu Abdullah (Terengganu) as well as MWHA rep Nor Piza Hassan.
"I hope that the participants will pick up pointers that will assist them in guiding umpires in this country," said Peter.
"In a way Malaysia is fortunate as there are many who are interested in helping umpires develop.
"If you compare Malaysia with other hockey playing nations in Asia, then I must say Malaysia are the top as they have a good program for umpiring and have umpires at high levels.
"Take for example China, they do not have umpires of international standards despite their team doing well."
Despite an array of international umpires, Malaysia has yet to have anyone serving as umpires manager at international level.
MHFUC chairman Amarjit Singh is currently serving as Trainee Umpires Manager at the Azlan Shah Cup.
Amongst the retired international umpires that are attending the seminar and could be considered for umpires managers are Jagjeet, V. Sasidharan, Daljit Singh, K. Ananthavale, B.Shaji, I.Somasundram and Ravinderpal Singh.
