Match 1: China-Germany 1-2

Germany have started their Samsung FIH Champions Trophy campaign in the best possible way with a hard fought victory over China. China dominated much of the game and took the lead thanks to a goal from XU Xiaoxu, but a double strike from Eileen HOFFMANN sealed all three points for Germany.

Germany claimed their seventh win against China in their eighth Samsung FIH Champions Trophy encounter.
Germany have now won the last five CT matches against China.
Germany recorded their first CT win since beating China 3-2 in 2009.
Like in last year’s clash, Germany came back from behind to notch up a victory.
China’s only CT win came in December 2005 and their last win against Germany in a competitive match was in the semifinals of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, 3-2.
Xu Xiaoxu scored her first CT goal, when she opened the scoring in the 9th minute.
Eileen Hoffmann scored her second and third CT goal. She has now scored two CT matches in a row as she had also scored in the Final 3-4 against Netherlands at Sydney 2009.
Natascha Keller has now played in her 10th CT tournament, equalling the German record set by Nadine Ernsting-Krienke (1991-2007).
Natascha Keller has now played 55 CT matches. She can overtake Nadine Ernsting-Krienke (57) as Germany’s record holder with most CT matches later this week.
Jennifer Plass celebrated her 25th birthday today by giving Eileen Hoffmann to score the 1-1 equaliser.
Match 2: Argentina-England 1-2

England delighted the home crowd with a hard fought but fully deserved 1-2 victory over Argentina in the second match of the Samsung FIH Champions Trophy for women. England took the lead thanks to a close range deflection from Hannah MACLEOD in the first half before a penalty corner deflection from Alex DANSON extended their advantage fifteen minutes from the end of the match. Noel BARRIONUEVO reduced the deficit in the 58th minute, but England held on for their first ever victory over Argentina in Champions Trophy competition.

England beat Argentina in a competitive match for the first time since a 1-0 win at the 1990 World Cup.
This is England’s first ever Samsung FIH Trophy win against Argentina.
Defending champions Argentina suffered their first CT defeat since losing 2-1 against China in their opening match of the 2008 edition. Argentina did bounce back from that defeat to win the 2008 CT.
Argentina have failed to win the last four CT matches, including the final in 2009, which they won after penalty strokes.
Hannah Macleod scored her first CT goal in her first CT match.
Alex Danson scored her second CT goal, almost one year after scoring her first in the 2-2 draw against Netherlands on 11 July 2009.
Luciana Aymar has now played in a record 12th edition of the Champions Trophy. She has also played a record 67 CT matches.
Noel Barrionuevo scored her 12th CT goal, all from penalty corners.
She has now scored the last four goals of Argentina at the CT.
Kate Walsh is the only player who represented England at all CT editions with England participating, 2002, 2003, 2009 and 2010.
Walsh received the first yellow card of the tournament, and the first in her CT career.
It was the seventh CT yellow card for England and the first since Leisa King, Lucilla Wright and Jennie Bimson were booked against Korea Republic at the 2003 CT.
Daniela Sruoga played in her 50th international match.
Match 3: Netherlands-New Zealand 3-1

The Netherlands women overcame a resilient New Zealand side to win 3-1 in the final match of Day 1 at the Samsung FIH Champions Trophy in Nottingham, England. Despite being the lowest ranked team in the tournament, New Zealand produced a superb, battling display against the world number number side, falling to defeat thanks to late strikes from Maartje PAUMEN and Kim LAMMERS.

Following a goal-less first half, New Zealand opened the scoring thanks to a penalty corner flick from Clarissa ESHUIS midway through the second period. The Olympic champions were behind for less than a minute, equalising with an open play finish from Eva DE GOEDE. With just four minutes of the match remaining it seemed certain that the match would end in a tie, but the ever reliable Maartje PAUMEN - top scorer at the 2009 Champions Trophy - netted a crucial goal before LAMMERS scored a third late on.

Netherlands beat New Zealand for the seventh time in eight Samsung FIH Champions Trophy matches.
New Zealand only managed to get a 2-2 draw at the 2002 edition.
New Zealand have not won in their last 13 CT matches since beating England 2-0 in Final 5-6 in 2002.
This was the 300th match in CT history.
Clarissa Eshuis scored New Zealand’s first CT goal since Honor Dillon scored in the 5th/6th place final against Australia in 2006.
Eshuis’s goal was also the 100th goal the Netherlands have conceded in CT history.
Eva de Goede scored her second CT goal and the second against a team from Oceania. She scored her first goal against Australia in 2007.
Maartje Paumen scored her first penalty corner goal of the tournament. She was top scorer of the 2009 edition with five goals.
Paumen has now scored in four consecutive CT matches.
Kim Lammers scored her 14th CT goal. She only trails Ageeth Boomgaardt who is all-time Dutch top scorer at the CT with 17 goals.
Minke Smeets-Smabers received a yellow card, the 15th for the Dutch in CT history, one shy of Korea Republic’s record of 16.
