Oman overcame a spirited challenge from Qatar for a 3-1 victory in the ongoing Asian Games hockey qualifying tournament in Dhaka on Wednesday.

The victory helped Oman top Pool A with nine points from three outings and they now await the second-placed team from Pool B in the semifinals scheduled to be played on Saturday.

According to news posted on the Bangladesh Hockey Federation website, the Sultanate squad went ahead in the 14th minute through Younis Ghabish Al Noufli, who capitalised on a goal-mouth melee to unleash a fierce shot from the edge of the box and sound the boards.

However, Qatar fought back and scored the equaliser in the 23rd minute thanks to a fine goal by Ali Sheraz.

Oman continued to dominate and forward Mahmood Ashoor scored a field goal in the 35th minute to make it 2-1 in favour of the Sultanate.

In the closing minutes of the match, Mohammed Abdullah Bait Awadh completed Oman's tally.

While Oman topped the group, Sri Lanka, who defeated Chinese Taipei 3-2 in another match Wednesday, ended their league engagements with four points. Qatar earned just one point from three matches.

The winners and runners-up of Pool A will be known today when hosts Bangladesh (6 points) clash with Iran (3) and Singapore (3) take on Hong Kong.

While the semifinals are scheduled for Saturday, the final is to be played the following day.
